Why does my Inkscape trace look bad?
An Inkscape trace usually looks bad for one of four reasons: the image is too small or a compressed JPEG, the scan settings do not match the logo (wrong mode, too many or too few scans), Speckles and Smooth corners are left at their defaults, or Stack scans is off, which leaves white gaps between colors. Each has a setting that fixes it, listed below.
What causes each problem, and how do I fix it?
| What you see | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Specks and blobs everywhere | Noise, JPEG blocks or texture traced as shapes | Raise Speckles; tick Smooth; trace a cleaner, larger copy |
| Jagged, stair-step edges | The image is small: each pixel becomes a step | Trace the largest copy you have; raise Optimize; tick Smooth |
| Rounded corners, soft letters | Smooth corners too high | Lower Smooth corners; for type, retype the text in the real font |
| Wobbly curves | Optimize off, or a noisy image | Tick Optimize and raise it until the curves start to drift |
| Muddy or wrong colors | Inkscape picks its own palette | Set Scans to the real number of colors, then set each layer’s exact color in Fill and Stroke |
| White hairlines between colors | Layers meet edge to edge | Tick Stack scans and trace again |
| Only one black shape | Single scan with Brightness cutoff on a color logo | Use Multiple scans, detection mode Colors |
| The background traced as a big shape | Remove background is off | Tick Remove background, or delete the lowest layer |
| Thousands of nodes, slow file | Too many scans, or texture in the image | Fewer scans, higher Speckles; then Path → Simplify (Ctrl+L), a little at a time |
| Nothing seems to change | The trace sits exactly on top of the image | Drag it aside: the image is still underneath. Delete it. |
What if the image itself is the problem?
- Small images (a few hundred pixels): no setting can invent detail. Find a larger copy: the original file, an email attachment, the image on your website.
- JPEGs: compression leaves halos around edges and speckled colors, which become extra shapes. A PNG of the same size traces cleaner.
- AI-generated logos (ChatGPT, Midjourney, Gemini): soft edges and dozens of near-identical shades. Merge colors first, or use a tracer built for them.
- Photos and textured art: Trace Bitmap turns them into posterized layers. Keep them as images.
Is there a faster way?
For a logo in color, vectorize it online: the colors, edges and corners come out clean without tuning, and you compare the result with your image for free before downloading. The SVG opens in Inkscape for any further editing. The settings themselves are explained in Inkscape Trace Bitmap, step by step.
When is SVGProof the wrong tool?
- A design that needs changes rather than a copy: tracing keeps the logo as it is. See auto-trace or redraw.
Questions
Why is my Inkscape trace black and white?
Single scan makes one color. Switch to Multiple scans and choose Colors.
How do I reduce the nodes after tracing?
Select the trace and use Path → Simplify (Ctrl+L). Repeat in small steps; too much rounds the corners.
Why is my traced logo blurry or pixelated?
If it still looks like pixels, you are seeing the original image under the trace. Move the trace aside and delete the image.
